New FLCL Returning to Adult Swim

On March 24th, Toonami announced the return of FLCL!

I’ll give you a second to stop hyperventilating from excitement. You good? Okay, let’s continue.

Don’t know what FLCL is? Shame on you. It’s pronounced Fooly Cooly (sometimes Furi Kuri), and here is funimation’s description:

Naota is a detached sixth-grader afflicted by the pangs of puberty. He’s fooling around with his brother’s ex-girlfriend when a crazed girl on a motor scooter runs him over, brains him with a bass guitar, and moves into his house. This pink-haired girl, Haruko—who claims she’s an alien—hurls Naota into the middle of a mega-corporation’s secret agenda. Oh, and now giant battling robots shoot from his skull.funimation

Since its release in 2000 (2003 in the US), FLCL received much praise. Time Warner’s press release even noted on the success of the series, saying it “ranked #42 among all shows on ad-supported cable among adults 18-34” on its release. It has also received a myriad of awards throughout its lifetime.

Last August, American anime newspaper Anime News Network reported Production I.G. acquired FLCL rights from Gainax. Production I.G. is known for their work producing many shows, from Ghost in the Shell and Attack on Titan to assisting in the Pokémon Origins short series. It will now be co-produced with Toonami.

In the new season of FLCL, many years have passed since Naota and Haruhara Haruko shared their adventure together. Meanwhile, the war between the two entities known as Medical Mechanica and Fraternity rages across the galaxy. Enter Hidomi, a young teenaged girl who believes there is nothing amazing to expect from her average life, until one day when a new teacher named Haruko arrives at her school. Soon enough, Medical Mechanica is attacking her town and Hidomi discovers a secret within her that could save everyone, a secret that only Haruko can unlock.

But why did Haruko return to Earth?
What happened to her Rickenbacker 4001 she left with Naota?
And where did the human-type robot ‘Canti’ go?Turner Press Release

It’s set to premiere late 2017/early 2018.
