Have a chat with anyone who reads or watches anything X-Men related and I’m sure they can tell you who they feel is the least useful or worst member of the team in their opinion. Maybe even you have an opinion yourself about who should be off the team. Is it Maggott, the guy who has robot worms eat stuff to help increase his power? Is it Chamber, the guy who accidentally blasted his own face off using his powers for the first time, but can still talk? Is it Choir, a chick who has a neck covered in mouths? Maybe you feel a little jaunty and want to say Cyclops because, let’s face it, no one really likes that tool.
(Editor’s Note: Cyclops was very useful in X-Men Legends because of his Leadership skill, but otherwise yeah.)
Well, in this miniseries by Marvel Comics, they introduce a character that could very well be the worst X-Man ever. Written by the hilarious Max Bemis, with art from Michael Walsh, this story centers on the young Bailey Hoskins. He doesn’t feel like he belongs anywhere, and when he learns he may be a mutant from his mutant parents, he heads off to Xavier’s School for Gifted Children. He then learns he has the most useless mutant power imaginable (which I won’t spoil here) and finds himself a loser kid in a new school all over again. He eventually makes friends with another student, who has an incredibly powerful ability that she’s not ever allowed to use, and they join forces in their uselessness. The series only runs for five issues, collecting in a trade book that’s also available. It’s funny, smart, and has so many references die-hard fans will enjoy rereading this again and again. I feel it ends on such an emotional high note, and should be recommended reading for any fan of X-Men.
