George Romero’s Shining Star

World famous cult director George Romero has been making films since the sixties, working on commercials and eventually working with the likes of Fred Rogers on “Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood”. It wasn’t until the late sixties when he found himself striking ‘oil’ with his groundbreaking “Night of the Living Dead” and reinvented the zombie sub-genre. Unfortunately, due to his studio screwing up the copyright, his film found its way onto public domain and he made little to no money from its release. On the positive side, we can enjoy this classic film for free – I’ve even included a hyperlink in its title above. He broke ties with his original studio and went on to make other horror classics such as Creepshow, The Crazies, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead. He has even made less gruesome films, like Monkey Shines, Bruiser, Martin, and one of my favorites, Knightriders.

Now it seems Hollywood is finally acknowledging Mr. Romero with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It’s planned to be unveiled in 2017 alongside other greats like The Rock, Deadpool, Starlord, and The Hulk himself, Mark Ruffalo. It could cost old George upwards of $30,000 to get the star, but that money doesn’t all come from his own pocket. He can hold fundraisers to drum up the cash needed for the star, and after begins a rigorous campaign to actually get it. Apparently, there’s a committee, and applicants have to submit a request to them in order to even get that far. Once the new star is selected, the struggle begins to get a decent place to put the star, meaning where on Hollywood Boulevard can you have it installed. A long and arduous process I’m willing to bet no one knew went on behind the scenes.

We all wish George Romero the best of luck, and hope we get to see his star soon, hopefully not covered in zombie brains. What is your favorite George Romero movie? Comment below and see you all next time!
