Do you have a Samsung phone and enjoy listening to its Milk Music? Probably not, as Variety reports Milk had not gained much traction with its users. If you do have it and enjoy it, I’ve got some bad news for you – Samsung has announced via a notification in the app and in an official statement that its Milk Music service will be shut down on September 22, 2016. Samsung also said that they are focusing on a new way of integrating music to their Galaxy devices.
Milk Music was advertised as “The Next Big Thing in Music”, released in 2014 as an ad-free competitor to Pandora and powered by Slackr Radio. It boasted 13 million songs spread over 200 curated stations. My dial was always set sternly on the 90’s Hits station because what else do you need? After every other song or so, a DJ would announce the next song with a little factoid regarding the artist or the song and also advised that the service was powered by Slackr Radio. Currently upon opening the app, a notification will inform you of the closure and point you towards Slackr Radio as the alternative. At least Slackr has the 90’s Hits station, but drastically more advertisements.
Samsung has yet to say exactly what the new experience they are working on will be. Last November, Samsung ended its Milk Video aggregate service after a year. Maybe with more advertising power it could be just the replacement we need. I’m simply hoping the big wigs at Samsung don’t decide to throw ads all over the place because then it’ll just be another music app with no differentiation.
