Recently, acclaimed comic artist and writer Mike Mignola announced he will be taking a year long hiatus from Hellboy at the end of his most recent run, Hellboy In Hell. He needed break from his “giant demon baby” to focus on other pursuits, stating that after over two decades with his crimson crusader he really just needs to clear his head.
If the absence of Hellboy leaves a void in your comic pull, let me give you dudes a suggestion: HEAD LOPPER.
Written and drawn by Andrew MacLean, Head Lopper is a four part series created in a style that mixes Hellboy and Conan the Barbarian, with a touch of Game of Thrones and Adventure Time. The main story follows the titular Head Lopper, aka Norgal, being hired by the queen of a mysterious island – which has recently become infested with monsters and usurpers – to stop an evil sorcerer with nothing but his wits, his sidekick (the head of a decapitated witch), and most importantly: a GIANT SWORD! Let’s just say he earns his namesake. Parents, please be advised; this title is not for all ages, with plenty of blood and heads flying and some rather strong language. That being said, this mini-series is an entertaining read from start to finish with impressive yet simplistic visuals, dark comedy, and a surprisingly emotional climax that will leave you yearning for more.
Now if you missed your chance to buy this epic in single issues, fear not true-believers. This October will see the release of the trade paperback that collects all four issues. Andrew MacLean has announced that season two should be out next year, so the action won’t be ending anytime soon!
