Deep Space Industries announced their plans of Prospector-1, which will be the world’s first commercial interplanetary mining mission. The plan is to fly to (and land on) a near-Earth asteroid. It will then start to investigate the asteroid and determine its value as a possible source of resources in space. Prospector-1 is set to launch somewhere between 2019 and 2022.
Prospector-X is the precursor mission to Prospector-1 and is a joint venture between Deep Space Industries and the government of Luxembourg. Prospector-X is an experimental mission to take place at low-Earth orbit. This mission is designed to test key technologies which are needed for low-cost exploration spacecraft. It is currently scheduled for a 2017 launch. This will represent the combined efforts of six different companies: Bigelow Aerospace, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, NanRocks, Orbital ATK, and the Sierra Nevada Corporation.
