We thought it seemed to good to be true – and sadly, we were proven right. The games development team over at PIXYUL announced its official cancellation over at their subreddit. For those of you who missed it the first time around, the idea behind ReROLL was a essentially a survival RPG set on Earth. To be clear, this is not some simplified, smaller map. The goal was to recreate a 1:1 replica of the entire actual planet, with a 24-hour day/night cycle.
Such a huge undertaking requires large amounts of capital which the gaming community was happy to provide. ReROLL’s Kickstarter raised a lot of money for the project despite the obvious challenges. As you can see in the video below (if it hasn’t been pulled offline yet), the plan was to render the Earth from images captured by flying drones. Even with the Kickstarter success, the company sought funding from outside investors as well. After all, an army of flying drones with HD cameras on them isn’t cheap. Unfortunately, it seems the last of those investor talks are over and the end has arrived. With no additional funding raised, the team was forced to abandon the project.
PIXYUL was started by former Ubisoft developers, Julien Cuny and Louis-Pierre Pharand back in 2014. It does have one other game that actually made it to production: a first-person shooter called BIOS. Those who originally funded the Kickstarter will be given a Steam key for this $15 game – however, many fans (some of which gave $300 or more) are outraged at such a paltry offering. This was combined with the fact that many investors had asked for radio silence during negotiations, causing many fans to feel abandoned by the lack of information.
