Are You a Watcher or a Player?

Nerve is a movie coming out July 27th. Watch the trailer above.

Besides the entire sketchy ending and obviously exaggerated plot, could this be the next big thing?

youtubetwitchThink about it. Everybody seems to be putting their faces online anymore. Besides Facebook, Instagram, and other social media websites, more and more people are attempting to become internet famous. There are 500 hours worth of videos uploaded to YouTube every minute. Last year, there was an average of 550,000 concurrent viewers on Twitch at any time. Now Twitch is expanding to more than just gaming, even having recently released a Social Eating category.

The Daily Dot released an article last year showing how Twitch streamer Destiny makes around $1,000 a month from being a Twitch partner, but makes an average of $1,500 from Twitch donations per month. Trust me, I’m aware how much effort goes into having your own Twitch stream, but that’s still a mostly one-way interaction between viewers and the players for playing a video game. Can you imagine the revenue stream on two-way interactions? There is one industry that comes to mind with two-way interaction with viewers.

Camgirl KatieKays

A webcam model, typically known as a camgirl or camboy, is a model who typically performs sexual acts on webcam at the request of a viewer and in direct exchange for tips. According to Business Insider in a 2014 article, one model has made $1,500 in a single show and claims her income to be about $62,000 a year. A 2013 article published by TheRichest states the average webcam girl can bring in $300 to $1,000 a day, and some camgirls can earn as much as $60,000 a month. Two-way interactions bring a level of personalization not found online, and that’s attractive to a lot of people.

So why not take it a step further? Bring webcam models and Twitch streamers together in a Truth or Dare game where viewers interact and pay the player to do certain tasks that aren’t entirely sexual by nature. It would be like a live episode of Jackass with viewer interaction. Whether fake or not, even online prank videos are skyrocketing in popularity.

swattingNow, I can’t throw out the sketchy ending and obviously exaggerated plot entirely. The NY Times even wrote an article in 2013 about camgirls potentially being blackmailed, threatened, and pressured to do acts they don’t wish to do. Twitch streamers also share a similar worry. A Twitch streamer’s identity can be found and somebody may call 9-1-1 with a fake emergency message that involves sending a SWAT team to that streamer’s house so the viewer can watch the dangerous prank unfold live. The act, called swatting, is extremely dangerous and even prompted the FBI to release a notice basically saying not to do it. The dangers of online fame are definitely real.
