Move over Alexa and Google Home, we’ve got a new contender. A video (above) released by YouTube channel Sufficiently Advanced shows freelance engineer and YouTuber Allen Pan playing his ocarina with astounding results.
You may recognize Pan from his viral video where he has people try to lift Thor’s hammer Mjolnir. He’s shifted from one nerdom to another by creating a home automation system using a Raspberry Pi, a microphone, and a bunch of ESP8266 WiFi modules interconnected to respond to the tunes from his ocarina inspired by the Legend of Zelda. As he plays a note, the lights on the Alexa-like device light up. When he plays a full song, you can hear the wonderful tune just like in the game. All the songs correspond to the songs as well: Zelda’s Lullaby unlocks the front door, Sun’s Song will turn on the lights, Bolero of Fire turns on the heater, Song of Storms turns on the humidifier, Minuet of Forest waters the plants, Song of Time announces the current time (and temperature), Saria’s Song will call his cell phone, Epona’s Song unlocks his favorite mode of transportation (his car, not his horse), and finally the Song of Healing resets the system back to its original state.
Please be aware if you want to try this at home, it has very obvious security concerns. But to be fair, I’m not sure there’s a bunch of criminals wandering around with an ocarina. Also, for added security, the Raspberry Pi could be on its own LAN to isolate it from the internet except it would lose the ability to call his cell phone or acquire any other information from the web.
What do you think? Would you like to give this a try? Would you add any other Legend of Zelda songs to the mix? Comment down below with your thoughts!
